Improved coverage for most prescription drugs
We have made changes to improve coverage for most prescription drugs starting January 1, 2022. Eligible retired members will have a grace period to transition to the new drug plan.
Grace period for members with a chronic condition
If you are a retired member enrolled in the health benefits program and taking tier 2 drugs for a chronic condition, you will have a grace period before the new reimbursement rate applies. In this case, you will see no change in coverage for 12 months, giving you time to transition to a BC PharmaCare eligible drug, if you choose.
The grace period is based on your recent claims history—claims paid for your tier 2 drug in the six-months before January 1, 2022.
Reimbursement will remain at 70 per cent during the grace period. The new reimbursement for tier 2 drugs (60 per cent coverage) will take effect January 1, 2023.
Note: If you are still working and nearing retirement, you are not eligible for the grace period.
